In 1960

New York Governor Nelson Rockefeller pulls off a major upset, narrowly defeating Vice President Richard Nixon to win the Republican Presidential nomination.

Rockefeller surprises the party and the nation by picking former Secretary of Health, Education and Welfare, Oveta Culp Hobby of Texas for Vice President.  Hobby as well served as Director of the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps during World War II, and as head of the Federal Security Agency in the Eisenhower administration.  At the time Hobby was named as the running mate, she was President and editor of the Houston Post, from which she resigned to run for Vice President.  Hobby had gained a measure of respect in the nation for her public roles and as a business executive.

Senator Hubert Humphrey of Minnesota comes from behind, upsetting front runners Senator John F Kennedy of Massachusetts and Senate Majority Leader, Lyndon B Johnson of Texas, to win the Democratic Presidential nomination.

Humphrey as well surprises the party and the nation with his selection of a running mate, recently elected Governor Edmund G "Pat" Brown of California.  Brown had previously served as District Attorney of San Francisco, then as Attorney General of California.

How does this election turn out?

Nelson Rockefeller/Culp Hobby (R): 277 EV, 48% of the PV
Hubert H. Humphrey/Edmund Brown (D): 203 EV, 45% of the PV
States Rights Ticket: 57 EV, 7% of the PV

Governor Rockefeller defeats Senator Humphrey to become President of the United States. Without a States Right's ticket in the South, I have no idea how the South would have voted. Maybe for Hubert but I doubt it, thanks to his support for Civil Rights, likewise with Governor Rockefeller.
