Mods -- if this has been posted elsewhere, let me know and I will delete it.  I searched and didn't see that anyone had it.

Sam Nunn and David Boren, two moderate to conservative Democrats, have endorsed Barack Obama for President.  The story was in the Howey Political Report this past weekend.  (It's an Indiana political blog, but they covered this because they keep a close watch on Nunn and Lugar's joint effort to contain and eliminate loose nukes.)

Anyway -- I totally agree that endorsements don't motivate voters.  (For that matter, Georgia and Oklahoma have already weighed in.)  But endorsements do sometimes signal trends or thought processes of various party constituencies.

And I have to wonder if either, or both, of these fellows could be in line for cabinet jobs.

There's actually a thread for this. But what positions do these guys hold? Memory has utterly failed me.

David Boren used to the Governor and US Senator of Oklahoma and now he is the President of the University of Oklahoma.  In fact, he preceded Jim Inhofe in the Senate.

Sam Nunn was a US Senator from Georgia (correct me if I'm wrong).  I don't know that much about him.

Nunn is against the Iraq War. In fact, I think he was against Iraq 1, which caused him to retire.

They're both former Senators (Nunn from Georgia and Boren from Oklahoma). They were also a big part of the driving force behind the failed Unity '08 project. Nunn was a Democrat but is now an Independent; Boren AFAIK is still a Democrat.

Boren's son is a Representative, and they have the same name.

Boren's son is a Representative, and they have the same name.

Boren is still a Democrat, along with prominent Oklahoma voice and former Oklahoma Sooner/Dallas Cowboy head coach Barry Switzer.

Dan Boren is the Democratic Congressman for OK-2.

Too bad, too, because look at who took his spot.  None other than Jim "I hate my constituents" Inhofe.

Do you have anything to back up what you posted about Boren (it must be deep closet since he's currently married)?  And in particular, that was he hitting on minors.

it is all rumors, but the gay part has been pretty well documented.

there are some conspiracy theories involving boren and the cia also.

but there have been rumors of boren's fondness for young male pages dating back to his days in the oklahoma state legislature.

OK. I wonder why he bothered to get remarried, when outside of politics.

As far as I know, David Boren is not gay, though he had some run-ins while in the political arena.

I know very little about Boren.

Calling Sam Nunn a wretched human being is absurd.  He, and Senator Richard Lugar, have devoted themselves to the monitoring, tracking and demolition of loose nukes.  The two worked together to eliminate loose nukes under the first President Bush and President Clinton.  The current President Bush has dismissed their efforts, prompting the usually loyal Lugar to warn that the President is out of touch on this one issue.  I think both men received, or were at least nominated for, a Nobel Peace Prize.

IMO, Nunn is a great American.  He's far more conservative than me on a lot of issues, drawing comparisons with Ben Nelson and John Breaux.  But Nunn has far more foreign policy experience.

He did oppose the first Gulf War and that did prompt him to retire.  He knew he would be defeated in his bid for re-election. He was succeeded by Max Cleland, a true war hero who would be smeared by the Rove machine in support of Saxby Chambliss.  Cleland got the boot after one term.

Nunn's vote against the first Gulf War is something I would have to investigate further as to rationale.  Even I supported that war, as long as it remained limited to the liberation of Kuwait. So I am not sure what Nunn's beef was.  Some lawmakers, including Republicans, were frustrated that the US paid most of the table for Operation Desert Shield and Storm.  Gulf States we were defending and who were rolling in money paid far less than their fare share.  Japan, South Korea and other nations -- who benefitted from the outcome of the war in terms of access to oil -- could also have ponied up more.  I am not sure if Nunn was anticipating this or if he was simply anti-war in principle at the time.

Since 9-11, he's been pretty outspoken in favor of the war in Afghanistan.  I am not sure about his position on Iraq.

I can't imagine too many better candidates for Secretary of State, except possibly Joe Biden.

I am not so sure about the idea that Nunn would've lost his reelection bid. I have no numbers on what his approval ratings were in 1996, but the vote had been cast more than 5 years before the election; I doubt this one vote would've sunk the efforts of a Senator who had been reelected without opposition in 1990.

Almost true.  They're not irrelevant with their fellow Dems....i.e. Super Delegate Dems.  So this is good news for Obama.

Daily Kos would turn into a smoking crater.
