http://observer.guardian.co.uk/magazine/story/0,11913,738196,00.html

I never knew this before stumbling across this article today, but I have found the CBC reported on it as well.

http://www.cbc.ca/fifth/conspiracytheories/index.html

Look under The Saudi Connection especially there.

The last paragraph of the Guardian story is interesting--

"On 11 September, while Al-Qaeda's planes slammed into the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, the Carlyle Group hosted a conference at a Washington hotel. Among the guests of honour was a valued investor: Shafig bin Laden, brother to Osama."

Wow, I had no idea about the business relationship between the families. Hopefully those have now been severed...

You never knew this? Must have been more widely reported this side of the Atlantic...Never got denied, appears to be 100% genuine.
But remember: Business relations between the Bushes and the Bin Ladens is not the same as business relations between the Bushes and Osama. Osama broke with his family. He wouldn't have had any dealings with a son of a Bush. So, a lucky escape for George W on that one, doesn't really prove anything except that the Bushes are businesspeople.

Exactly, this is really old news in Europe. But, again exactly, the bin Laden family has very little to do with Osama, that's the way it has been for a long time. So I actually don't know whether the ties have been severed or not... Wink

The Bin Ladens are a big family though.  Most of them do not support Usama.  That's what I heard anyway.  I remember hearing that when they made a big deal about how one of his brothers goes to a university in the U.S.

They don't support Osama, but they aren't exactly what I want my president to have business relationships with either...but hey-he hasn't! (My president is Johannes Rau.)

Johannes Who? Wink No one ever knows about German presidents, they're like Italian ones, or Russian PMs, losing Vp-candidate in the US, etc.

They're figureheads, they don't have power.
But Rau was CM of Germany's largest state Nordrhein-Westfalen for twenty years, so he should be at least slightly known.

Yeah, OK, but I didn't follow German politics very closely back then...

That's true, of course. When Rau came to power in NRW, I wasn't even born. When you were born, 9 or 10 of those 20 years had passed already...

Hehe...that might be the reason for me not remmberig it then...

Plus he was the SPD's challenger to Helmut Kohl in the 1987 election. So yes, he is quite a prominent figure.

Yeah, I only remembered that too late. But anyways, in early 1987 Gustaf was probably in his mother's womb, so he wouldn't be able to remember it. I should have remembered it, since that was the first time I heard Rau's name (I was eight).

Hey, me too - are you a 1979 child as well? For some reason I thought you were older...

I am older. I was born in 1978. The 1987 election was rather early in the year.

Good quote! I loved "Catch-22"! Smiley

I didn't mean just one year though... for some reason, I always get the mental image of a 40-year old professor-type when I read your posts. Wink

That's meant as a compliment, seriously. I always enjoy reading your analyses and you obviously know what you're talking about.
