Who speaks and people listen?  I didn't limit this to the DNC or anything although you're welcome to include them, but the Party in general.

Obama, of course.

Gore hasn't said much of anything lately.

Pelosi.......I leaned toward Obama, but he has to be too careful about what he says.

Well, we all know it isn't Bill Clinton.

 I'd bank on Joe Lieberman

"Power" to do what?

If it's broker a peace between Obama and Clinton then I would guess that such a power is split between Reid, Pelosi, Dean, and Gore.  If we're just talking about power to kill a bill, then it might be Reid or Pelosi.  And the list goes on with various aspects of said power.

I wouldn't necessarily agree, but the balance of power in the Senate does rest on Lieberman's shoulders.  I've always found it amazing how much the bulk of the Democratic party hates his guts, despite owing a great deal to him for the past year.

Any proof of "the bulk of the Democratic party hates his guts"? I've always thought he was okay, even though he has been kind of a single issue guy in the past few years.

I think that's kind of unfair.  Except for the war, Lieberman is a solid liberal, and people blaming him for us not being able to pass any anti-war legislation need to remember that without him, we wouldn't even be the majority party right now.

The Democratic Party IS going to tell Lieberman to go f**k himself once the Democrats expand their majority this November.

I don't think it would matter either way. He's probably going to end up in the Cabinet and the GOP will pick up a seat.

That's entirely the kind of post-Congressional election hubris that cost the Republicans 1996. The Democrats in Congress avoided it last year, but during the primaries, among the voters, their guts spilled out. The kind of pound-the-table grassroots liberalism that brooks no compromise on the parts of Democratic representatives has its place: in one corner of the party; by no means in control of it. And the defeat of John Edwards, the netroots-favored candidate, still shows that they are not as big as they think they are.

And this is because you can get so much done in the Senate with 50 votes (or 55 or even 59 for that matter)?

Exactly. The reason the party is in the mess it's currently in is precisely because no one ever has nor can anyone ever control the Democratic party (as much as the Right would like to believe the Clintons can and do). It's deliberately designed to be a chaotic, disorganized entity.

The answer of course is President Bush.  He has the most influence, and folks listen to him the most, in the Dem Party.
