George McGovern, in the Wall Street Journal:

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120485275086518279.html

"Under the guise of protecting us from ourselves, the right and the left are becoming ever more aggressive in regulating behavior. Much paternalist scrutiny has recently centered on personal economics, including calls to regulate subprime mortgages. ....

"Why do we think we are helping adult consumers by taking away their options? We don't take away cars because we don't like some people speeding. We allow state lotteries despite knowing some people are betting their grocery money. Everyone is exposed to economic risks of some kind. But we don't operate mindlessly in trying to smooth out every theoretical wrinkle in life.

"The nature of freedom of choice is that some people will misuse their responsibility and hurt themselves in the process. We should do our best to educate them, but without diminishing choice for everyone else."

100% correct.  If we bail out people that make risky financial decisions that don't pan out they'll never learn their lesson and more and more people will make risky financial decisions.  It sucks, but there has to be losers in the free market, that's how it works.  The alternative is slower overall progress and mediocrity for all, at best.

While I don't agree with a lot of what the guy stands for, at least he stands for things.  He had the balls to stand up to the Executive branch to try and stop an unpopular war.  I wish today's Democrats could do that.  He even had the balls to stand up to the machine politicos in the Democratic Party.  That took real balls.  Giving political power to black people and women, in 1968?  Brave.  40 years later and they're the front runners in his party.
