And it's not just because of the evening caucuses. Delegates are awarded on the basis of turnout in congressional elections, and Hispanics are not exactly known for turning out in off-years...

The Jackson '88 example bodes well for Obama.

It's official: Texas has the most f**ked up delegate allocation process in the entire country.

Hopefully that lack of turnout extends to the primary/caucus as well. On a side note, I am considering a boycott of lapdances from Latina strippers until the nomination is decided.

It'll be important for Obama to spend a couple of days in the Valley retail politicking. I think if he really focuses on South Texas, in person, he can, if not win it, keep the margin close enough to come out with a statewide win. He did after all keep California to a 10 point margin, and that was with a half-effort. He'll have about two weeks this time to divide his attention between Ohio and Texas.

Hopefully he comes to Austin for the one-year anniversary of his first super-rally on February 23rd as well. Grin

The volunteer director that led the phone-banking I was at today said that it had been invented by some party insider who wanted to hold on to power during the primaries by winning the caucuses big. That guy apparently supports Clinton. Tongue

It's a wacky system - and yes the proportioning system helps Obama, though the actual Senate boundaries don't.  They give him more hope in the three East Texas SDs than I ever would, but who knows...  Maybe the male whites there will protest-vote Edwards again...

The system is quite old.  The guy must be quite old also.

Oh, ok, my apologies. I still don't understand why we consider other federal elections to be "off year" elections but that's another debate for another time.

Well, you have two types of general elections:

1. Ones with a presidential elections; and

2. Ones without a presidential election.

So the "presidential election" component is "off". Tongue

Delegates were awarded on the basis of the 2004 presidential vote, and the 2006 gubernatorial vote.  The Democratic candidate finished 2nd in both races in SD 20 which includes McAllen and Corpus Christi, and had only a narrow victory in SD 27 which includes Brownsville, Harlingen, Weslaco, and PSJA.

Texas has always had the evening precinct conventions after the primary - remember that this is a regular primary, with a presidential primary added on.  The election of actual delegates at a convention is not unique to Texas.

With the GOP race effectively over, how many Republicans in Texas are going to vote for Obama to stop Hillary?  One Texas voter on another website is going to.

I've said this before.  Obama would do well to tap into the deep seated hatred that Texas Republicans have for the Clintons.  Campaign in the Republican suburbs.  Lots of anti Hillary votes there.  Mine for example.
