Release of Poverty Statistics Draws Fire
By Ethan Wallison
Roll Call Staff
August 9, 2004

Few Washington insiders noticed, but a switch of some import was made quietly last year. The Census Bureau chose to release its annual U.S. poverty figures not on the traditional Tuesday downtown at the National Press Club, but rather on a Friday afternoon at Census headquarters in Suitland, Md. — a place far from most newsrooms, and at a time when most sensible people are focused on matters other than demography....

Full article requires subscription, but looks like the administration tried to get away with another one. So what was the poverty data?

The only question is, why this is appearing in Roll Call a year late. Whats the current story? Only subscribers can know.

You can see very clearly how during the [great] B.Clinton era poverty level went down and changed to the opposite direction after Bush came to power.
The common conservative explanation for poverty is: The poor are poor because they are lazy. Many voters buy this theory. These voters are mostly religious conservatives, so lets talk to them in the language they are supposed to understand.

They know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in darkness
Psalm (82:5)

Understand, ye brutish among the people:and ye fools, when will ye be wise?

Its strange that there was no significant rise in poverty rates until now.  The recession is long over.  We are learning more each day of what a recession looks like in the new economy, perhaps this is a symptom of this basic change.

I have yet to hear a single conservative claim that all poor people are poor because they are lazy. What they claim is that some or many are, and more become that way because of programs such as welfare encourage these people to be lazy because the government will provide for their needs - why work if you're taken care of? Whether you agree with this logic or not is another matter, but perhaps you need to apply those psalms to yourself before you go and make claims that aren't true.

This is the sort of thing that Kerry needs to get into the news himself.  He should be attacking Bush on all the terrible economic news we've been having, not being forced into a corner on Iraq.
