I think that the 8% result for Ron Paul in New Hampshire signifies that libertarianism in the United States is officially a joke. That's not stopping Free State Project founder Jason Sorens from putting a spin on things:

Ron Paul's showing in NH was a Hindenburgian failure. I thought for sure he'd break 10% with ease.

FWIW, I've never gotten the impression that NH was particularly fertile Libertarian ground.

Independent, yes.  But "Live Free or Die" is an old slogan.  Maryland is sometimes called "The Free State", and you don't see us going around electing Libertarians.
