...Vilsack never dropped out? Would he have had Iowa tied up? Would a victory in Iowa have propelled him to the "top-tier"? Would Iowa even matter?

I have a feeling he would be about at Gephardt level in 2004 right now, or if he was in the lead Iowa would not carry nearly as much weight and he would struggle to get out of the second or even possibly the third tier of candidates.

Yep. I was going to mention this. Ya beat me. Also, IIRC, Vilsack wasn't winning in the polls when he dropped out.
