http://www.startribune.com/587/story/1512701.htmlCiting his environmental focus (his one bright spot, in my opinion), Governor Tim Pawlenty is finalizing a trip to the Arctic (northern Canada) next spring. He will meet with famed explorer Will Steger who is setting out for an expedition. Pawlenty has stated he has an interest in seeing the effects of climate change himself in the Arctic and sees this as a great way to do it: With somebody who has a lot of experience up there.
The timing isn't the best, since it will be bitterly cold and utterly frozen, but it is the only time that Pawlenty can get up there and meet with Steger. If Steger leaves any later, he could encounter melting and shifting ice floes that could be very dangerous.
Either way, I think the effects of climate change will be obvious even in the throes of Arctic winter.
The two are meeting in Duluth to discuss climate change on Lake Superior on Monday, and they are expected to discuss and probably finalize the trip there.
I'm not going to poo poo on Pawlenty's environmental efforts because I think the guy is a first class douche bag. I'll take what I can get, and I think it's excellent to have someone passionate about environmental issues in the Republican party.
