Forgive me for not having a clue but I don't see how having a unified national ID as opposed to say 50 easily corruptable IDs will lead America down the road of increased authoritairanism.

Apparently you didn't read the first post, which very clearly laid out major problems with this bill. Also, I'd argue that a National ID card in addition to giving the government even more surveillance powers (and "extra legal" abilities) over us would make forgery easier. It's a lot more convenient to have one card to fake than multiple ones.

Edit: I read the first post and goddamn. Ok WHAT were the GOP types smoking when they came up with this act? Clearly stated, NON pointlessly intrusive security measures are the way to go not giving the DHS a blank check to act as an Americna Cheka/Gestapo.

If I'm reading it right, this basically immunizes the government from civil suits claiming loss from the actions.  That isn't uncommon.
