LONDON (MarketWatch) -- The euro rose over $1.40 for the first time ever and sterling traded over $2 against the greenback on Thursday morning.

A report in the Daily Telegraph newspaper noted that Saudi Arabia has refused to cut interest rates in tandem with the U.S. Federal Reserve for the first time, which it said suggests the kingdom is preparing to break the dollar currency peg.

This move "risks setting off a stampede out of the dollar across the Middle East" the report said. Recently, the euro rose 0.4% at $1.4025 and sterling traded up 0.1% at $2.0029.

I read somewhere that the Canadian dollar is also very close to overtaking the American dollar, as well.

Actually, it has already hit the crucial 1-to-1 ratio. Really no more Canadian Dollar jokes for you. It's us who will be making jokes from now on.

It only hit parity for a nano second this morning, I believe it's at 99.4 cents right now. Smiley

When I worked at the tourist store this summer when the ratio was 0.90-0.95, they accepted USD for 1 to 1. I wonder what their rate would be now. Wink

Once the dollar is over $1 US, if I ever work in sales, I will never accept American money unless it's at the exchange rate.

Many hotels and restaurants here accept Canadian dollars at par.  I think that was very generous of them when the CAD was only worth 60 cents!!!  Now its finally trading even.  Plus our economy is being boosted by all the Canadians coming down here to shop.

Well I think I still have a $5 Canadian bill from my trip up there a few years ago.

The flipside; manufacturers are starting to raise concerns that a strong Euro could result in job losses.

I was so mad when I saw the Australian graze US$0.90 - when I lived there it went from 0.71-0.76.

YOUR DOLLAR IS WORTHLESS. TIME TO WIPE ASS WITH WASHINGTON!!!

the Canadian Dollar closed at more than an American dollar for the first time since 1976.
