My brother thinks that third parties are a waste and that there shouldn't be any of them around.  I disagree with him.  I just wondered what everyone thought of this.

Although he was a socialist, he was dead on with voting (Eugene Debs): It's better to vote for something you want and not get it than to vote for something you don't want and get it.

Third parties here in America have proven to be great starters to the passing of much needed laws, and in other countries they have proven to be successful as powerful forces.

Your brother is wrong, but that's ok, since he is entitled to be wrong.  The country would be better off of there were more influential parties than the two dinosaurs we currently have.

Your country would be better without the Democrats and Republicans, not the minor parties.

Of course, no one ever accused the Greens, Libertarians and Constitutionalists of being good replacements. No one except their supporters, anyway.

Third parties are kind of like drugs. Everyone keeps reminding children to "Just say no", and yet so many people end up having flamboyant encounters with them. They're pretty damn addictive, actually.

That's right. Just say no, kids. Just say no.

Reminds me of 2004 when Ralph Nader visited NC State University to speak. I knew I wasn't voting for Nader but I attended anyway cause I don't live in Iowa or New Hampshire so I never get to see presidential candidates, even third party ones.

There was a disgusted person at the back the whole time with a sign that said "Reelect Bush, Vote Nader". After Nader talked (he's very eloquent by the way, although I imagine he's had lots of practice), he asked for a couple audience questions. The first one was "What do you say to people that voting for you and not John Kerry is a vote for George W. Bush."

His response: "Vote for Kerry." Cheesy

The real trouble with third parties is that, more often than not, they act as spoilers, allowing the major party with which they have the least in common to win. Of course, I support the right of all citizens to support any party they choose, but I think that no candidate ought ever to be elected to any office, with less than 50 percent of the vote. Runoffs may even help credible third parties if people consider that they can stray from the two-party system without helping to elect the least desirable candidate.

The best part about third party candidates is a great many of them are honest people who are not “career politicians” that never stray from their principles to get elected. According to what the American people always yell about, they should all be elected. If the vote is between two “career politicians” and a third party man who matches my previous description, the third party man should win since that is what the voter wants. However, the voter does not want that, since the “career politicians’ in office gives them something to complain and be cynical about.

Third party people are usually very honest and idealistic, and that is not what voters want. Its hard to change a problem, but its very easy to complain about it. Smiley

People prefer "career politicians" because these people more frequently know what they are doing. Experience is important.
