What began as a mere congratulatory message by Taiwan to Narendra Modi for his swearing-in as the Prime Minister, has now snowballed into an online skirmish. Hours after objecting to PM Modi's comment that he looked forward to having closer ties with Taiwan, China has now said there is no such thing as 'President' of the Taiwan region.

In an X post, a spokesperson from the Embassy of China in India wrote, "There is no such thing as "president" of the Taiwan region. Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory."

Initially, Taiwan President Lai Ching-te congratulated PM Modi on his electoral win in the general elections.

In a message posted on X, Lai wrote, "My sincere congratulations to Prime Minister on his election victory. We look forward to enhancing the fast-growing Taiwan-India partnership, expanding our collaboration on trade, technology & other sectors to contribute to peace & prosperity in the Indo Pacific."

In response to Lai, PM Narendra Modi tweeted, "Thank you Lai Ching-te for your warm message. I look forward to closer ties as we work towards mutually beneficial economic and technological partnership."

India's foremost strategic interest is to keep Russia and China from being in sync 100% of the time. This allows India to better its hand vs China, while simultaneously not getting too reliant in any one power.

As usual it's very situational.
Indian foreign policy is guided first and foremost by realpolitik above everything else.

Ah, Modi's employing the well-worn tactic of starting sh**t with a boogeyman to distract from one's own failures. The fact that his party won 240 seats instead of 400+ has nothing to do with Big Bad China, and provoking them now will do nothing to solve any of India's problems.

OSR, why do you support Taiwan anyway? Is it because of your deep rooted belief in freedom and democracy? Surely not, since you're a staunch supporter of Modi, who has moved India away from a secular, pluralistic democracy towards a Hindu-centric authoritarian state, and a staunch supporter of anything India does, including increasing Russian oil purchases from 0 to 2 million barrels a day. Perhaps it's because you hate China and would support anything anti-China because to you anything bad for China is good for India?

How the Hell is this provoking

Anyway a large reason I am pro Taiwan is because they are anti communist and while it would have been much better for the ROC to have won the Chinese Civil War , that did not happen so Taiwan becoming a separate country is the next best thing.

Anyway lol at calling the Indian National Congress not authoritarian. They are still controlled by a family who produced a pm who literally tried to end democracy, did a mass sterilization program, and nationalized much of the economy. Also lmao at saying I support India's Russia policy because I 100% do no not and that is a large reason I do not support a multilateral deal with them but rather only support an easily enforceable bilateral treaty which can be enforced without having to go through a bs court system.

Lastly Modi unlike Xi actually has expanded upon the liberal reforms started by Rao while Xi has reversed much of the liberal reforms started by Deng because Xi is a committed Communist.
