From Hilary Mantel:

He never sees More – a star in another firmament, who acknowledges him with a grim nod – without wanting to ask him, what’s wrong with you? Or what’s wrong with me? Why does everything you know, and everything you’ve learned, confirm you in what you believed before? Whereas in my case, what I grew up with, and what I thought I believed, is chipped away a little and a little, a fragment then a piece and then a piece more.

Yes, I may be biased because of Mantel but I've come to admire the old bastard Thomas Cromwell. (Not very nice, but what Tudor official was?)

I don't like Catholicism but Thomas More was principled, pious and virtuous to a fault. Thomas Cromwell was ultimately felled by the same gears he once turned himself. I don't judge him too harshly though - Henry VIII was one of the most destructive monarchs in English history and his court was simply a decades-long cult of hysteria that resulted in many innocent deaths.
