My mom has

She claimed she wasn't supporting Trump in 2016, but a couple years ago she admitted that she voted for him.

My brother, my dad and I are not fans of Trump and do not support Republicans, but my mom leans to the right on a lot of issues, so I guess she just didn't want us to put her on blast. But I'm even more upset by the fact that she hid it for so many years, despite all the conversations we've had about him since then.

She claims she voted for Joe Biden in 2020, but frankly, I'm not even sure about that anymore. She rarely has anything good to say about him.

Do you think it's ok to lie about your vote in certain circumstances?

No, you shouldn't lie about this.  But a stern "It's none of your business" is fine to say if someone is pressing you about it.  Under no circumstances should you ever ask someone how they voted.

My birth mother lied about voting for Bush twice. She screamed at me on the ride home from grandma's for asking about it to the rest of my liberal family at the dinner table.

Sort of.  My wife worked for a while at a small business run by a couple of extreme MAGA types.  She's fairly apolitical and really hates talking about it, so when those two would start talking politics -- which they did frequently -- she'd just nod and politely agree with them, and let them assume she shared their beliefs and had voted for Trump (she didn't, on either count).

not that I know of.  My mom doesn't like to talk about voting for Bill Clinton (TWICE!), but she won't lie about it.

There's no way to be certain. No one has admitted lying.

Grew up in a rock-ribbed Republican suburb of Chicago, so my mom lied and told people that she didn’t vote for Obama in 2008. Years later she admitted it.

Funny, because the town is pretty solid Democrat these days, at least for Presidential contests.

I think it's more common to keep quiet and let people assume you agree with them or emphasize different parts of your views to different people than it is to outright lie about who you voted for.

My brother is mostly apolitical but has mastered that art with different sides of the family with different politics.
