What ever hapened with his candidacy? Is he still considering a bid, or did he pull a "Pataki" and just hint that he wasn't running?

He hasn't announced his intentions either way.  Although after how he crashed in 2004, I'm not totally sure.

Part of the reason he crashed was not jumping in early enough, so I think it's safe to say that he's out.

I don't think he'll run.

But he's vouching for a cabinet pick in a Democratic administration.

for someone so well educated and so bright he was amazingly unimpressive as a candidate. I doubt he would do much better this time

...but chances are that he has SedDef or SecState in his future

He should and will stay out of this one and become Sec of State or Defense.

Is he eligible for Defense? Has he been retired long enough?

I believe the rule is:

"A person may not be appointed as Secretary of Defense within 10 years after relief from active duty as a commissioned officer of a regular component of an armed force."
