Their reasons for trying to eliminate other departments are clearer (they want education to be in the hands of the state and local goverment, and they want energy to be deregulated for the interests of oil, gas and coal), but I donīt see what are the main reasons here.
Iīm not sure what Project2025 wants here, I will read that part in the next days.

Eliminating the Department of Commerce has been a rhetorical priority for GOP budget hawks since the 1990s; it was part of Gingrich's "Contract with America," IIRC.

The thinking goes that a lot of programs and offices within Commerce are duplicative or wasteful.  For example, the Economic Development Administration is one of 62 grant-making community and economic development offices within the Federal government.
