https://www.inquirer.com/education/pennsylvania-college-reform-state-funding-shapiro-20240126.html

“Enrollment in state universities and community college has decreased by about a third, the governor’s office said. And colleges are competing for the same students, duplicating programs, driving up costs and reducing access.

On Friday, Shapiro announced a three-pronged plan to reinvigorate public higher education by:

• Uniting Pennsylvania State System of Higher Education universities with the state’s 15 community colleges under a new governance system
• Setting tuition at those schools at $1,000 per semester for low and moderate income students and increasing Pennsylvania Higher Education Assistance Agency grants for students attending private universities by $1,000
• Distributing state appropriations to Pennsylvania’s state-related universities – the University of Pittsburgh and Penn State, Temple and Lincoln universities – according to a performance-based formula”

For everyone else's benefit, and so they have a link to click on:

Gov. Josh Shapiro proposes sweeping reform of Pa. state-funded higher education
Shapiro’s three-part plan calls for a cap of $1,000 per semester on the cost of tuition and fees at state-owned universities and community colleges for Pennsylvanians making $70,000 or less.

Higher education should obviously be tuition free for all, but this is nonetheless a great step in the right direction. Shapiro has been a very solid governor so far.

If he keeps it up then he might become the first statewide candidate to crack 60% in 2 decades come 2026.

One thing I will note about him is how a lot of publications seem to be labelling him as a moderate Democrat. From what I can see, he straddles the line between the two wings of the party very well.

California will still be the cheapest state for community colleges.

Well; I think it's because Governors operate more off policy ideas and actually getting stuff done, instead of hashing over and over again the Progressive/Establishment wars as we have seen in 2016, 2020, and possibly 2024 as well.

And they frame their policy ideas in moderate language that tries to at least appeal to the vast majority of Americans.

Why should stupid, violent people be given free college education at the expense of taxpayers?

The percentage of violent people on a college campus is extremely low and if they've turned their life around and paid their debt to society, who cares. If you're arguing this from a tough on crime perspective, you're far more likely to run into an ex-con at a grocery store than on a college campus. There are better arguments against free college than this.

Furthermore, wouldn’t accessible college education or even technical trade school education be a deterrent against violence and poverty ?
