CARLHAYDEN is not moderate; he's just extreme in the opposite direction of most Democrats.

I don't know the first two very well but both Jamespol and BushOklahoma are decent and respectful posters even though I don't see eye to eye on them on a lot of issues but I like them.

Hayden is just "out there." If you get my drift.

Granted I'm in no way a liberal extermist but I will spit my two cents into this.

Viriginian87
Frodo

This bottom one... well, let's just say that I avoid intentionally reading anything he writes.

Well he's said so, anyhow. Although I see no reason not to believe him.

He's basically a Dixiecrat (though a non-Southern one, so less race-baggage) who's still around.

Here's CARL's rationale for his affiliation:

Democrat for essentiall two reasons:

First, by right of heritage

had one grandfather who helped found a union and who was a county chairman,

another grandfather (also a union member) was a Justice of the Peace upon his retirment

an uncle who was a major of a small city (who was on the Executive Committee of the state AFL-CIO)

my dad worked for a while for the Pantagraph (owned by the Stevenson family)

Second because many (but not all) Republican officeholders/high party officials are themselves either 'county clubbers' or subservient to them.

I believe that when the bureaucracy screws up (and it does so all to often) that the officeholders should be called in to correct things.

Over the years I have contacted officeholders to make real/positive changes that favorably impact the little guy.

Example 1.  An old friend of mine from college was elected to the City Council more than thirty years ago and at my suggestion he implemented a mandate that curbs at interestions had to have 'cuts' to allow the handicapped (wheel chairs, etc.) to transferse them.

Example 2. When a developer tore up a roadway and did such a bad job in patching it that it presented a traffic hazard, I called my County Supervisor to have it fixed.

Example 3. I worked with another old college friend who was a State Representative (and latter County Chairman) to put an end to the sales tax on groceries.

Example 4. I worked with the Community College Board Members to put an end to a tax scam by big business where they 'donated' wortless products to the college and then claimed tax write offs for the full value of the items while leaving the college (the taxpayers) with the expense of storing/disposing of the junk.

Example 5. I worked with several County Recorders and the Secretary of State (Arizona) to clean up problems with the registration/voting process.

Example 6. I worked with Sen. Barry Goldwater to correct flight patterns by helicopters at Davis-Monthan that were endangering residential neighberhoods needlessly.

Example 7.  I worked with Sen. Dennis DeConcinni to assist a poor woman who was getting screwed over by Social Security.

Example 8.  I worked with Sen. Jon Kyl to assist a Viet Nam war vet to get proper treatment from the VA.

The bottom line is that while some Republicans (the County Supervisor, one of the County Recorders, and Senator Kyl) have been quite cooperative, too many (like a former U.S. Representative who I detest and Sen. McCain) are too arrogant to concern themselves with assisting the people they are supposed to represent.

I have respect for pretty much everyone on the list. Only CARL garners a displeasing opinion from me. Ive seen all of them (again discluding CARL) prove they have rationale, cool personalities, and a knowledge of politics.

If somebody calls themselves a Democrat and can support their argument with good reasons, then they are welcome in the Democratic family.

My grandfather was a Democrat his entire life whose own father helped found the railroad union in Omaha, Nebraska.  He had a lot of views that differed from the Democratic party today, but at the core, he was still a Democrat.

I get sick of people trying to purge the party of people that they don't like.  (This is now especially occurring in the Republican party, with talk of "primarying people" and stuff).

Urbana elections are all about replacing Liberal Democrats with Progressive Democrats.  Just throw them right under the bus.

What's the difference? From what I've seen "progressive" is just a nicer way of saying "liberal."

Usually the terms are interchangeable, but I remember a commentary- it may have been written by Joe Klein- arguing that they comprise two separate traditions within the left. "Liberals," so the argument goes, are traditional labor-oriented lefties who are "tough" on "national security." "Progressives" retain the economic leftism, but mix in elements of social activism and tend to be ardent doves.

In other words, it's the difference between JFK and the New Left. Joe Lieberman is a "liberal"; Russ Feingold is a "progressive." I assume this is what HardRCafé was getting at. Personally, I think it's a bit silly, although I would obviously identify with the "progressives."

My Rationale for being a Democrat:

1) The Republicans Hatred Towards Gays!
2) I would have always agreed with their platform, at least 55% of the time since the parties creation.

So your "rationale" is that you agree with the party you are in.

Sheer and utter brilliance buddy....

I like him, I don't know what your problem is with him.  He's just a bit temperamental, nothing more harmful than that.
