I don't know for certain, but I'd imagine it went something like this.

"we have a bunch of kids trying out for the new basketball team coach, how should we split them up?  Bob's Drug (the team sponsor) got us a hundred jerseys, numbered 1 to 99."
"we are going to want to easily separate the kids by position for sorting purposes and the shorter guys are going to be trying out for the Guard spots, give them the smallest numbers and the tallest kids are going to be trying out for Center, give them the biggest numbers.  Give the Forwards the middle numbers."

Actually 0-99.
the lady on the phone at the Jersey Emporium tried to tell Bob that ordering a 100 instead of 99 would actually save him money, but he thought that sounded like a scam and said no thanks.
