The ACLU are there to defend civil liberties as they see it, they're not a wing of the Democratic Party.

They went from having a pretty broad brush (and in my opinion correct) view of civil liberties to basically being a Democratic activist group. I mean every third tweet I see from them is trans related and another 20% immigration.

Yes, the civil liberties of trans people and immigrants have been under sustained, brutal assault, thus it makes sense the ACLU would highlight them so I’m not sure what your point is?

We have one of the most lenient, open immigration policies in the world.

And?

Immigrants are by and large not under brutal assault.. Certainly not enough to warrant a fifth of the ACLU's efforts. Seems like they forgot what the first letter in their name stands for.

Seems like you have forgotten the historical circumstances in which the ACLU was formed.

What does defending the right of conscientious objectors during and immediately after WW1 have to do with enforcing a basic and fair border policy?

They haven't changed. They just started talking about groups of people for whom you do not support civil liberties.

They've changed a lot. They no longer focus on free speech much at all. They used to defend free speech, the right to say what you want even though many might hate you for it. What little of that they were still doing went kaput sometime during COVID.

And I support civil rights for both groups of people. But civil rights =\= getting to stay in a country illegally and forever because you have a sad backstory.

They absolutely have changed. Around 2017 they went from being steadfast defenders of First Amendment rights for everybody, even when politically unpopular on the left, to being essentially an arm of the Democratic Party. Thankfully FIRE seems to be doing a good job rising to the occasion and filling the void the ACLU created with their shift.

Pandering to the conservatives doesn't work for Democrats, just ask Joe Donnelly.
