12% of people doing something that 0% of people did 4 years ago is at least a little interesting. I still regularly see elderly people on the Metro wearing masks -- it's sad because I don't want to see elderly people feel like it's unsafe for them to go into public. "I don't care" actually seems much more heartless.
You're obsessing over what someone decides to wear. So again, I ask, why do you care?

Good. I'm glad Democrats are returning to their libertarian roots of not coercing individual behavior. We’ve come a long way from "you will show your papers to enter a restaurant" and "you will be fired for not getting the shot". My governor really ended the pandemic 👏

I cared to notice that elderly urban minorities still wear masks. Biden said the pandemic was over — why does the base of the Democratic Party still fear getting a virus? 4 years ago wearing a mask in public was considered extremely anti-social. It’s an interesting phenomenon and if noticing that counts as being obsessed then I’ll accept that.

Select people before the pandemic would wear masks during flu season. With that said, it's interesting that neo-Nazis have no problem wearing masks when they hold their demonstrations. If they are so right, then why do they need to obscure their identity? That's what is anti-social, but you don't criticize those people for wearing masks.

This is false. Completely, objectively false and you cannot convince me otherwise. At most this tells us that a substantial number of people when asked over the phone feel compelled to lie and say that they do.

There is no way this is correct. Even in my liberal NOVA suburb, less than 5% of people wear masks, and in the surrounding rural areas, nobody does and you get dirty looks for doing so. There's either a problem with the question framing, people are lying because they think wearing a mask is the "correct" response, or this is a 1-in-20 outlier.

I'd maybe buy that 12% wear masks in some situations, such as going to the doctor's office or riding public transport, but there's no way that 12% are doing so on a regular basis.

It was always lower than polls said.  There was (and to some degree still may be) a social desirability bias to say you wear them.  But, I also imagine that another reason that it doesn't track with what people observe is that people wearing masks are less likely to leave home much at all.

My observations have been <1% in all settings except airports and airplanes, which might be 10-20% right now.

I've only worn a mask recently when I know I'm sick and usually just at the clinic.
