The ruling decisively striking down the independent legislature theory -seen in context- carries greater significance than any of us originally thought:

It's hard for me to be too excited given that 33% of our ayatollahs don't believe in democracy, but thankfully two of them are fairly close to death so I guess that's a silver lining.

It links into an interesting point about how Trump did not have the unity he needed in the Republican Party to subvert the election. While he was a toxic presence, enough people did their jobs properly and that will be the case again in 2024 (the Democratic victories in 2022 also helped).

While true in a sense, they also shouldn't get brownie points for not punching us in the face.

Let's just hope these institutions can hold up during the 2024 election. Even if Biden is re-elected, Trump will claim fraud once again.

But good for the Court on this one. Had they ruled for the independent state legislature theory, it would mark the end of American democracy as we know it.

In the sense that it was absolutely a no-turning-back moment that they rejected, yes. It's faint praise, though.

What options does he have besides whining though? Harris will preside over the electoral vote count, some of the states he wanted the legislature to overturn the results in now have Democratic legislatures, all have governors who are Democrats or at Brian Kemp who already told Trump to piss off and earned his ire already, and the Electoral Count Reform Act makes it much more difficult to even disrupt the count.

Yeah, if he loses, he will never be as dangerous as he was in January 2021. What's he going to do - call for some more riots without being able to prevent proper security?

Eh, if someone hands you a loaded gun and tells you to shoot American democracy, and then you politely decline, you didn’t really “save” American democracy.

Sure, they had two broken-clock moments this term, but it's not going to undo the distrust that so many Americans now have in them. Nothing short of overturning their most controversial landmark decisions could do that, and something along those lines will take the planets and stars aligning.

Considering the track record (and political makeup) of this Court, we should take our wins wherever we can get them.  This is as conservative a Court as we are going to get, and if even they step back from the brink, we are in good shape going forward.
