Evil Texas Republicans want to make it a requirement that a candidate must win a majority of the state's counties to win statewide.

I guess they decided they're running out of time to win state elections fairly, so they're rigging them now before it's too late.

Unlike some other things some TX Rs have sought to do this is actually very extreme.

This will go nowhere.  An amendment to the state constitution requires 2/3 of each legislative chamber to put it on the ballot for approval by the voters.  Republicans don't have anywhere close to 2/3 in either chamber.

Blatent unconstitutional.

Anyone who serious proposes such legislation should be expelled from the legislature. Because if you support this, you're not for democracy.

The Texas GOP must believe that Blexas is going to happen eventually, otherwise they wouldn't feel the need to do something as foolish as this.

blatantly unconstitutional and would never pass a statewide vote. even if it did it would be struck down in court.

Mississippi had an "electoral college" for its gubernatorial elections through 2020. It required that candidates win a majority of both the popular vote and a majority of State House districts, or else the winner was to be decided by a contingent election in State House.  This seems to be even more extreme than that.  However, it should be noted that this is just a policy proposal made at a party conference and not an actual bill sponsored in the Texas Legislature.

State House districts are equal in population, so I don't think there would necessarily be an OMOV federal constitutional problem with the Mississippi rule. Counties, needless to say, are not.

It was put on hold by a judge as likely unconstitutional and repealed overwhelmingly in 2020 in a referendum. It was replaced with a runoff requirement if no one gets 50 percent.

At least state house districts have equal population. Some counties in Texas would have literally 50,000 times more voting power than the urban counties. And yet if you go on X a ton of people are defending this proposal!

Texas has about over 90 counties with populations under 10,000 people and below that dozens with only a few hundred to 5k people. Fewer than 200k people would be able to control the state under this proposal which is absurd.

Texas Republicans vs. North Carolina Republicans: Who's worse. Both equally make sure this race remains a pure tossup.

At this point, some Republican officeholders should just openly admit they would indeed prefer an autocracy or dictatorship. No wonder their party leader sides with Putin.

If they do this, Dems should say only candidates who win a majority of counties with skyscrapers over 50 stories are eligible to win elections in their state. Equally fair.
