Buchanan (the independent in MT-02) polling this well isn’t actually that surprising. The state's largest unions have endorsed him over Ronning, in part because her haircut, glasses, shawl, and earrings are downright offensively neoliberal for the newborn #populist heartland that is MT-02.



Given that Ronning has been written off even by local Democrats and there’s no serious D investment on the D side (while there is a semi-serious effort from Buchanan), it’s not too surprising for him to be polling close to Ronning. Buchanan also has three times as much cash on hand as Ronning.  

Your overall point is certainly valid, though. This part in particular is just sad-
