The VP didn't really become an important/semi-important position until Walter Mondale. But with all that aside, who is your favorite pre-Mondale VP?

Discuss.

Is the question specifically about the one's tenure as VP or in general? Truman and Johnson rank high, though the vice presidencies were unimpressive. Truman was VP for just 82 days. Humphrey was also pretty good, though Johnson kept him in low-profile role.

Most influential pre-Mondale VP was certainly Nixon.

I'm talking about their tenure as VP.

The earlier Vice Presidents had such little impact that I'm tempted to say Henry Wallace for a laugh; certainly one of the more interesting men in the office. Calhoun had an obvious impact but not in any way I'd admire. Fillmore probably had some influence in the Senate during his brief time.

John Adams would probably be my real answer.

Society if Henry Wallace had never fallen out with Nicholas Roerich and thus brought THEOSOPHY to the White House:

George Clinton was an incredibly corrupt governor of New York before being VP, who opposed the Constitution on the grounds that it would hurt him. But I guess if you just mean his Vice Presidency, ala the topic title, then sure. Also, I find it ironic you have Clinton, the slaveowner, among men who were much better on racial issues.

Elbridge Gerry is very underrated. As is Charles Dawes. I like Nelson Rockefeller also. Those are probably my three favorite Vice Presidents pre-Mondale (besides those that would later become President). Al Gore being my favorite since.

I'd probably have to go with John Adams. Of the 20th century VPs, I'd have to go with Henry Wallace as FDR choosing him pissed off the party bosses (both urban and southern) so much. Nixon certainly had the most active Vice Presidency of the pre Mondale VPs, at least of the pre 1977 20th century VPs, but there's still debate as to whether or not Ike genuinely liked him or not. LBJ, Humphrey, Ford, and Rockefeller were miserable in the Vice Presidency and LBJ was, wrongfully IMO, underutilized due to RFK's hatred of the guy. Turman's tenure was also too short.
