The President has nominated Gabu as Secretary of Forum Affairs. I, hereby, open the hearing on his nomination

I have full confidence in Gabu's ability to do this job, and will certainly vote in favor.

Just out of interest though, do you intend to appoint a Deputy SoFA?

Wouldn't I be required to do so by law?  The Deputy SoFA Act says that the Deputy SoFA "shall be appointed by the secretary", not "can be appointed by the secretary".  Unless something has superceded that act that I was not aware of.

Either way, I don't see why not.  In case I have something that I absolutely must attend that prevents me from being present when an election must start (I don't foresee such an event occurring at the moment, but I'm not a soothsayer), it would be good to have a stand-in available.  The only problem will be finding someone who's both active enough and yet has no ambitions for a higher office in the near future, since the position of Deputy SoFA is, admittedly, not one of glamour and glory.

Please do ask any questions that you may have (everyone, not just Jas); I always dislike confirmation hearings where everyone just sits around waiting for the vote to open up. Smiley

I don't believe that it is mandatory legally.

I agree that a ready and able stand-in is a good thing, if difficult to find.

Anyway, thanks for your reply Smiley and best of luck with your term of office.

Given that there are only 9 serving senators, with 5 Ayes, 0 Nays and 0 Abstentions, the Senate, hereby, confirms Gabu as Secretary of Forum Affairs
