Must seem odd coming from a liberal like me but there are things I always liked about Nixon.

That's not surprising.  After all, he did win election to the Presidency three times.

Oh no, not the "1960 was stolen" crap again....

I voted for the EPA. SALT is a close 2nd.

I was making a joke.  I thought it was kinda funny.  Guess not.  I should have put the Tongue sign in.

The only state that I am about 100% sure Nixon won was Illinois, jfern's amusing comments aside, because southern Illinois was a good bit more Democratic in 1960 than it is today.

Daley knew how to run things and Kennedy was about the closest thing to a "Mafia" president we ever had in this country.  Not that this was a bad thing either, frankly.

Options 1 and 2. He would have gone down as a great President had he not been such a vindictive b**tard. Oh, and of course there was the small matter of Watergate, and... er, ok, nevermind, forget what I just said.

Well, I guess he really wasn't so bad once you compare him to Reagan and the Bushes. Wink

My apologies, given how poorly sarcasm or jokes can travel on the internet. I myself try to insert the smiley face everytime I'm not serious.

I do find it annoying however that the myth (which is clearly conradicted by the maps and math on this very site) has gotten perpetuated that Mayor Daley stole the entire election for Kennedy. I even remember, in 2000, people making this comparison between Florida in 2000 and Illinois in 1960 in that both were won under questionable circumstances and tilted the election to the winner who otherwise would've lost....even if Illinois had been for Nixon, he still loses. He would've needed not only Illinois, but at least one other state (some have alleged LBJ stole Texas for JFK, but I don't see how a 2 percent margin could be obtained fraudulently).

The LBJ thing all centers around the 1948 Senate primary runoff (which was the race back then, no Republican party in Texas), which was definitely stolen for him by the infamous Ballot Box 13, which helped him win by 87 votes.

2% is quite impossible to steal, even with the normal shenanigans in Texas politics that occurred back then (esp. South Texas.)

EPA and Chinease relations were his best achievements... As far as Vietnam... He escalated the war, before we got out... I think it's a rather dubious distinction.

Ending the Gold Standard was the most important thing Nixon did, and one of the two I voted for.

The other one I voted for was creating the EPA.

Keeping his butt out of prison was probably the greatest of his lifetime achievements.

Here's to the State of Richard Nixon
For underneath his borders the devil draws no line
If you drag his muddy rivers nameless bodies you will find
And the fat trees of the forest have hid a thousand crimes
And the calender is lyin' when it reads the present time
Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Richard Nixon find yourself another country to be part of

And here's to the schools of Richard Nixon
Where they're teaching all the children they don't have to care
All the rudiments of hatred are present everywhere
And every single classroom is a factory of despair
Oh, there's nobody learnin' such as foreign word as fair
Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Richard Nixon find yourself another country to be part of

And here's to the laws of Richard Nixon
Where the wars are fought in secret, Pearl Harbor every day
He punishes with income tax that he don't have to pay
And he's tapping his own brother just to here what he would say
But corruption can be classic in the Richard Nixon way
Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Richard Nixon find yourself another country to be part of

And here's to the churches of Richard Nixon and Billy Graham
Where the cross, once made of silver, now is caked with rust
And the Sunday mornin' sermons pander to their lust
All the fallen face of Jesus is chokin' in the dust
And Heaven only knows in which God they can trust
Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Richard Nixon find yourself another country to be part of

And here's to the government of Richard Nixon
In the swamp of their bureaucracy their always boggin' down
And criminals are posing as advisors to the crown
And they hope that no one sees the sights and no one hears the sound
And the speeches of the President are the ravings of a clown
Oh, here's to the land you've torn out the heart of
Richard Nixon find yourself another country to be part of

The coup against Allende which was one of the west's few victories against the red menace in the decade of western retreat that was the 1970s. Viva Pinochet!

Normalization of relations with China and SALT

Dave

I agree with Dave. I personally think Richard Nixon had the potential to be one of America's greatest Presidents, but thanks to Watergate he was hated by a majority of people.

Write-in:  Kent State

No I don't really mean that, but I thought it would make good shock humor.
