[This is the last of these, I promise]
Here are the facts.
1. Alex Lee (D) is the freshman incumbent. He's in his mid-twenties and one in 2020. He won 15% in the primary and then easily won the general election against a Republican. In office, his main agenda points have been campaign finance reform and climate change. I approve of his stances on both issues. However, Lee also proposed 3 bills that the Democrats themselves tabled, complained about the legislative process, and has apparently worked with the state Republicans. Moreover and more importantly, he supported legislation that would vastly reduce jail times for serious crimes - they'd lower 10 year sentences to one year sentences; 20 year sentences to 2 years; and 25 years to life to just 3 years, on charges such as murder, homicide, manslaughter, felony rape, sexual assault, child abuse, home invasion, first degree burglary, and gang violence with a machine gun or assault weapon. Yikes. Specifically, murder or homicide penalties would go from 25 years to just 3 years under his plan. And felony robbery home invasion as well as sex offense would be reduced from 20 years to two. You get the picture. I know all this because my family received 4 pieces of campaign literature on the subject. So I with all this I was predisposed to oppose the guy. 2. I also had no intention of backing Bob Brunton, the sole GOPer in the race. If he and Lee ever made it to the general election, Lee would obviously win, and in a landslide, given the area's partisanship. That left three candidates for me: 3. Kansen Chu (D). Chu, a Taiwanese immigrant born in Taipei, is the ex-assemblymember for this seat and he retired in 2020 to seek some countywide office in Santa Clara County. He lost there and is now running for his old seat. Eliminated for me. 4. Lan Diep (D), an ex-member of the San Jose City Council. Endorsed by the Mercury News and East Bay Times. He's Vietnamese-American and an ex-lawyer. We received one (1) campaign flyer from him, in which he slammed Lee as 'Inexperienced. Ineffective. Ideologue;" Chu as "Unreliable. He quit this job, remember?"; Keng as simply "Unprepared" (despite the fact that they both are city councillors and while she's still in office, he is not), and Brunton as someone who'd get Lee elected. He also touted the newspaper endorsements. 5. Lastly, Teresa Keng (D). She's the only Alameda Countyer in this district, despite the majority of its population being in Alameda County, and sits on the Fremont City Council, making her a native of my current city. A sexual assault survivor, she has won awards for her climate change proposals, runs a small business, and has two disabled kids. I received much campaign literature from the Keng campaign. Ultimately, this is the candidate I supported.
Who would you support, though? Mainly, I'm curious to see if Democrats on here would back Lee or some other Democrat.
