Elected. After all it was only his great grandparent who was an illegal and under our idiotic standard of giving people citizsenship(just born on US soil. I'd change it to either naturalize or born on US soil to citizen parents)

I'm sure people with this scenario have been elected.

What's more important: who someone's great grandpa was, or who someone's parents were?  If the person's family has been hard working and productive for three generations, I seriously doubt the identity of the person's great grandparent would be an issue.

Now, if the person is the son of an illegal immigrant, I would say that then there'd be a problem.

I don't see as to how the opponent of this candidate could uncover this and make an issue out of it without looking like a Pat Buchanun type moron. The candidate could probably be elected.

I agree with Gabu, the child of an illegal immigrant would have problems, but not the great-grandchild of one, especially since since the great-grandparent woudl likely be so old that the only way for him to have been an illegal immigrant would be if they had violated the Chinese Exclusion Act.  It wasn't until 1921 that the United States placed quotas on most places under the Emergency Quota Act and even then Latin America had no numerical restrictions until 1965.

Both the Kennedies and the Bush's had grandparents who engaged in, shall we say, ethically questionable activities.

Schwartzenegger, though inelegible for the presidency, holds signifigant popularity despite the fact that his dad was a nazi.

On the other hand, a lot of Bush's popularity came from sharing his father's name, and the whole Kennedy clan makes out on the memories of JFK.

Ideally, I don't think who one's parents or grandparents (or for that matter even spouse)  are should matter, the individual themselves is the one up for election.

Arnold's father lived in the Third Reich and to make any advancement in society you had to be a member of the Nazi party.

Now, now.  Don't you know that it is politically incorrect to even obliquely refer tothe fact that Austria was by and large a willing and enthusiastic part of the Third Reich.

Schwarzenegger violated his visa. Republicans only care about brown skinned illegal immigrants.

Alberto Gonzales' grandparents are/were illegal immigrants.  Of course he's not headed for the presidency anytime soon, but maybe the SCOTUS under McCain.

Who on earth knows who their great grandpa was? I don't think it would matter at all. I'm sure it has happened already, in fact.

I love it when people defend Nazis... Shocking thing is that they are generally GOPers.... Wonder why...

In addition to the number of generations, I think the circumstances may play a role. My grandmother was a Jewish illegal from Poland who came in 1928.  I don't think anybody holds it against her.

I have no idea if my maternal grandfather was a legal resident; he was born in France of French parents.  He died before I was born.   I've been elected to public office three times.
