Azores volcanic island hit by thousands of quakes starts evacuation as fears grow
Quote
Authorities on a mid-Atlantic Portuguese island hit by thousands of small earthquakes in recent days started evacuating people living at the bottom of coastal cliffs on Thursday as fears of a stronger tremor or a volcanic eruption grow.

Since Saturday, over 2,000 earthquakes, with a magnitude of between 1.6 and 3.3, have been recorded on the volcanic island of Sao Jorge in the Azores archipelago, according to the region's CIVISA seismo-volcanic surveillance centre.

The small quakes, which have caused no damage so far, were reported along the island's volcanic fissure of Manadas, which last erupted in 1808. A big earthquake hit the island in 1980, causing severe damage.

CIVISA has raised the volcanic alert to level 4 out of 5, meaning there is a "real possibility of eruption", and said the number of earthquakes was above normal levels.

I think that Mike88 has mentioned this in his general Portugal thread.

Hopefully all the local people can be made safe and sound.

So far, things have stabilized even though the earthquakes haven't stopped. Since this seismic crisis began, more than 14,000 earthquakes were registered, but only 200 or so were felt by the population. Nonetheless, the regional government decided to move sick and elderly people to safer places, and advised people to leave the most dangerous areas of the island for the moment. So far, 2,500 people, 30% of the island's population, have been evacuated.

Best of wishes for the people of the island.
All these earthquakes certainly seem to be a worrying sign.

Yes, and seismologists are still scratching their heads to find out what is actually happening. Some say it's just tectonic plates, others say it's magma rising. But, there are other mysteries: there are already soil deformations in the island even though the earthquakes are at depths of 10/12 kms (6/7 miles), which, according to specialists in the matter, is really weird.

Right now, there are several specialists monitoring the island earthquakes by the minute, and we can only hope that nothing bad happens.

Never been but I saw this good youtube vlog describing the unique climate and places in the Azores, it looks like a real interesting place. Lots of good drone footage in this one.
