After the latest elections, women are 31 of the 51 members of the New York City council.

https://www.curbed.com/2022/01/nyc-city-council-women.html

The New York City Council is one of the most significant local governments in the US, on par with a state legislature. This is an interesting development, which will likely have implications in future elections as these women run for Congress, borough president, mayor and potentially statewide office.

So what do you think could be the reason for this change?

More women are becoming involved in politics. It'd be interesting to compare that to the city's gender makeup--it's possible that there's close to or as much involvement now among women as men.

Democrats tend to prioritize women running for office, and New York is one of the most Democratic cities in the country

Good to hear. As long as they do a good job of governing.

Interesting.

The Nevada legislature is also majority female as well so we’ll see what changes happen

IIRC, both the Nevada and Colorado Houses achieved that after the 2018 midterms.  The New Hampshire Senate was first though, it became majority-female as a result of the 2008 elections.  And four years later, New Hampshire had an all-female congressional delegation, while also being run by a female governor.  Way to go NH women!

I wonder if they then became less notoriously angry.

There are excellent members involved in NYC politics, like Julia Salazar and Kristin Jordan

That seems to correlate with the gender breakdown of the U.S. population and electorate as a whole. Women comprise a majority of both. This is because they generally live longer than men and vote at higher rates than men do.

https://data.ipu.org/women-ranking?month=11&year=2021

So if New York were a country it’d be in the top three in terms of women legislators. America is 73rd at 27.6% female

Women make up slightly more than half of the New York City population, so this is a good development.
