Which matchup (candidate/candidate(D) vs candidate/candidate(R)) would result in the most backwards realignment (towards the past) and which would result in the most forwards realignment (the way things are headed now)?

Trump himself running against Buttigieg would be most likely to continue Trump-era trends.

The reverse would be something like Hogan vs. Manchin.

Hey, you never said the matchups had to be realistic.

Tim Ryan/Ted Cruz would perhaps extend the lives of the Democratic Party in rust belt and a Republican Party in the sunbelt. It still might not matter if enough people have moved, came of age after being brainwashed either way, or died in places like suburban Northern Ohio, NE Pennsylvania, Glendale or Scottsdale, Arizona,  or the Texas I-35 corridor.

Hogan vs. Manchin could bring us back to 1976 if the polarization weakened to the point that they both actually got nominated.

For the GOP: Trump/DeSantis or Trump/Scott vs. Warren/Butti

For Dems: Beshear/Adams vs. Cotton/Cruz
