Im not sure if this a typo or what.  Maybe they know something we dont?  The New York Times does polling from time to time.  Maybe they have some poll numbers that have yet to be released.

I looked it up myself.  I don't know where you're getting this version of the article from.  The article says:

In Maryland, where blacks make up about 30 percent of the electorate, the Democratic candidate for governor, Martin O’Malley, who is white, is leading the Republican incumbent, Robert L. Ehrlich Jr., in polls. Mr. O’Malley needs a large turnout among blacks in Baltimore to win, and he has mobilized more than 2,000 get-out-the-vote workers in black neighborhoods. He also helped his chances of attracting the black vote by selecting Anthony G. Brown, a black lawyer, as his running mate.

They must have just changed it!  I swear that quote is a direct quote from the article.

I emailed the Times to ask about the quote and informed them it might be an error on their part.  They must have changed it within the last 10 minutes.

As a rule, I have found that the NY Times makes way too mistakes for a paper of its supposed "renown".  Yet another example.
