In this era of you can find any information you ever want, English Wikipedia literally has no information beyond a date. Only reason I put up the thread.

The incumbent Vadim Krasnoselsky was elected the 3rd president of the mostly unrecognized state sandwiched between Moldova and Ukraine in the last election in 2016, actually defeating the then-incumbent president to do so.

Also, in the never-ending debate of how to properly transliterate the country's name into Latin characters, Prednestrovie sounds a lot better than Transnistria.

No it doesn't.

To put things succinctly:

Transnistria is a corporate state. All parts of society are dominated by the Sheriff corporation. Interesting information about the specifics of state capture in Transnistria may be found at this link.

In the 2011 election, both Sheriff and Russia withdrew their support from the incumbent, Igor Smirnov, who finished in third place. In the runoff, the young Sheriff-backed candidate Evgeny Shevchuk beat Moscow's candidate. Shevchuk subsequently lost Sheriff's support, leading to his defeat by the new Sheriff candidate Krasnoselsky. Shevchuk has since fled Transnistria and been sentenced in absentia to a lengthy prison sentence for corruption. It appears that there may be some sort of split in Transnistrian society between supporters of Shevchuk and supporters of Sheriff, although it's unclear whether the former have any influence or power.

If I have time I can try to look through some Romanian or Russian sources to see if I can find anything more.

Is this an election or an “election type event”?

Transnistria just sounds awful. Prednestrovia sounds like a place a 1980s Arnold Schwarzenegger movie could take place in. Put a stereotypical Russian accent on it, rolls off the tongue.

Doing a Google search, I didn't realize Sheriff's team in Tiraspol are in the Champions League and defeated Real Madrid.

Oh well, if it's good for the English Premier League to be owned by oligarchs and princes laundering their money, it's good for everyone else. European top-level soccer everyone!

There aren't many Gagauz in Transnistria, only around 1% of the population. They mostly live in Moldova proper or Ukraine.

Ah, Transnistria. An 80s scifi writer's idea of a corporate-run dystopia that also loves putting hammers and sickles everywhere. How chaming.

Yeah, Sheriff beating Real Madrid led to some very spicy soccer memes around here lmao
