Just looking at the old courts (particularly around Board and Roe) and at the time the majority, if not all of them, were appointed by liberal minded justices. My idea is the rulings of Brown, Board, and Obergefell lead to a sort of complacency in democratic circles that the court would (socially) always err on their side.

This is in large part what caused the conservative backlash in the second half of the 20th century, of course. The very idea of the Federalist Society was to mount a legal counterrevolution to liberal dominance of the judicial branch, which has been extremely successful. The left in America still doesn't seem to know how to respond.
