Quote
A massive trove of private financial records shared with The Washington Post exposes vast reaches of the secretive offshore system used to hide billions of dollars from tax authorities, creditors, criminal investigators and — in 14 cases involving current country leaders — citizens around the world.

The revelations include more than $100 million spent by King Abdullah II of Jordan on luxury homes in Malibu, Calif., and other locations; millions of dollars in property and cash secretly owned by the leaders of the Czech Republic, Kenya, Ecuador and other countries; and a waterfront home in Monaco acquired by a Russian woman who gained considerable wealth after she reportedly had a child with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Quote
The trove, dubbed the Pandora Papers, exceeds the dimensions of the leak that was at the center of the Panama Papers investigation five years ago. That data was drawn from a single law firm, but the new material encompasses records from 14 separate financial-services entities operating in countries and territories including Switzerland, Singapore, Cyprus, Belize and the British Virgin Islands.

The files detail more than 29,000 offshore accounts, more than double the number identified in the Panama Papers. Among the account owners are more than 130 people listed as billionaires by Forbes magazine and more than 330 public officials in more than 90 countries and territories, twice the number found in the Panama documents.

So how long until the brave person who leaked this information out will "accidentally commit suicide?"

The extent to which the rich and wealthy go to avoid paying taxes fails to surprise me anymore.

The scary thing is how little people care. No one will care. The US media certainly doesn't care lol. People are used to this and don't care.

Nothing will change. Nothing will ever change.

And if enough people think like that, indeed it won't.

And if enough people think like that, indeed it won't.

It's called experience.

This stuff has been laid bare for most of the 21st Century so far, and what's changed? One single banker went to prison for the GFC, and he was sent there for hiding a few million in mortgage bond losses, which is what happened every single day during it.

How many people were convicted over the Panama Papers? How many of those named in the Panama Papers were tried, convicted and imprisoned? I bet I can count the number of people who are imprisoned over those on my hands. The rest just insisted it was fake news and it blew over because no one cared.

It's hard to hear, but it's the truth. Nothing will ever, ever change because no one cares. The people who do care are powerless, and the people do care and have the power to do something are either ignored or conveniently run into a scandal that makes them powerless.

It if helps, impeachment over the content of the Papers is becoming a distinct possibility in Chile. Still a few votes short in the Senate to to suceeded, but even within the government's ranks people are giving it very serious thought.

A purely political maneuver through and through on both sides, but still a consequence if it does happen.

Why should people get "tried, convicted and imprisoned" when what they were doing was perfectly legal? One may consider exploiting tax loopholes morally reprehensible but that doesn't mean anything. If they didn't violate any law, there is nothing to be done.

The people who do care and have the power are typically dismissed as idiots who dont understand what constitutes a modern economy. And this is by the majorities of both the left of center and right of center parties in today's world.
