(Excluding Pokemon ones.)

Honestly, no, I don't think I ever have. An anime avatar is a sure fire sign that someone on Twitter will be absolutely awful and insufferable, from multiple possible ideological slants, but still awful nonetheless. Now I'll grant there's likely an exception for people who are just very into anime and don't really post about politics much and post primarily about anime, but since I don't follow or find those accounts they effectively don't exist to me.

I don't get anime. Those shows sometimes have really interesting stories, but I can never get past the animation style enough to enjoy them.

Yeah, this so much

I also must say it's unfortunate how seemingly more and more (non-anime related) children's shows seem to be incorporating elements of the genre (such as saying "Nani?!?!", those weird eyes, and hyper-exaggerated expressions, even for a children's show). It makes me cringe every time.

Most people I follow have anime avatars (the ones that don't have doll avatars), everyone I follow is either in Japan, someone I know outside of twitter, or primarily do art/comics.

I've also pretty much scrubbed politics/current events (save for weather stuff) from my twitter feed as extensively as possible (and have been muting people who start bringing it up more than in isolated simple comments)

I'm fairly put off by most of the action/fighting stuff pretty much for the same reason. Most of what I watch is more slice of life, there's a lot of nice laid back series with softer art that don't reach the mainstream, not to sound like a hipster.

Japanese animation is better than whatever CalArts garbage or gritty lifestyle cartoon produced by the US. There are smoother movements, cleaner art styles, and more luscious breasts.

I follow this account. I can't figure out if I like it ironically, out of morbid curiosity to figure out if they're serious, or if I actually like their content.

I wouldn't know, but it's true that some of the most vile takes I've seen on Twitter have come from accounts with anime avatars.

they are the only worthwhile twitter accounts i've ever seen

the most satanic takes i've noticed come from people using their irl faces or picrew as avatars

There’s plenty of variation in anime

For me it’s the constant exposition of details that an attentive viewer should be expected to pick up from context clues. I’ve long hypothesized that that’s the real reason anime appeals to people with socialization disorders.

There’s a lot of really good anime beyond the mainstream thousand-episode shows. I haven’t even seen most of the incredibly famous series, and I’ve got good recommendations for chill, intellectually stimulating shows. Check out Mushishi.

Agreed. Same could be said for picrew avatars as well.

No, but I’ve also edited the thread title to more accurately reflect my opinion.

Hobby twitter is good, though it would likely depend on your interests and (for entertainment) how much you can avoid the garbage fandoms.

I think there was a brief period where Noah Smith had an anime avatar, but other than that no.
