I've been curious as to why the media has been going along with this GOP narrative given that it's completely false.

FOX NEWS POLL:
Do you think schools and school districts should -- or should not -- be allowed to require teachers and students to either wear a mask or provide proof of a coronavirus vaccine for in-person learning? 54% should, 31% should not, 13% depends
https://www.foxnews.com/politics/high-concern-over-higher-prices

KFF POLL:
The KFF COVID-19 Vaccine Monitor said 63% of parents of school-age children polled by the Kaiser Family Foundation (KFF) said schools should mandate masks for unvaccinated students and staff in the building.
https://www.foxnews.com/health/covid-school-masks-mandates-poll

We've seen tons of videos of school board meetings with anti-maskers and the media going into a frenzy saying that the GOP being anti-mask will help them in the midterms.

And yet none of the evidence is pointing to the public being anti-mask at large, especially in schools. So why is the media going along with it, and why does the GOP think this is a winning strategy?

I think the bolded is important, but given the CDC's most recent guidance, blanket mask mandates are what are going to be imposed. This question of school mask mandates should be a decision left up to each individual school district or consolidated school district to decide.

Well, the Republican position is always more popular than polling indicates.

Republicans represent a shrinking but extremely loud minority of Americans, and have done so for a long time.

Whiny perpetual 'victims' too.

It's a glass house littered with shards.

If this were true, Trump would have gotten blown out of the water last year, and would have lost as badly as Hoover did. Why did that not happen?

And over-represented. To address Calthrina's post.

Eh it's mostly true. Trump's political positions are not very popular (outside of a handful on which he deviated from Republican orthodoxy), he has too much in common with people like Bush, McCain, Romney and Pence. If you take away Trump's personality, he loses in a landslide.

Let's be honest - the GOP is a toxic brand with a score of unpopular positions, issue by issue.
this

the gop's insistence on social conservatism of the religious right sort plus budget hawking has been so bad for them as a party that despite being so awful policywise, never delivering anything of value on economics the democrats remain a viable national party and not collapsing into something only getting the vote totals of greens or libertarians

I posted this in the COVID thread, but thought it might be good to post here also.

Quote
School openings so far reveal science is right -- masking works.

... In some places where schools have been open for a while now, such as Georgia and Hawaii, public health experts notice what happens when schools follow the science: classes go on without disruption as long staff and students wear masks.

But when staff and students do not wear masks, Covid-19 can spread, forcing people to stay home to quarantine and classes returning to virtual learning.
In just this week schools have closed, at least temporarily, in Georgia, Indiana and Mississippi due to cluster outbreaks among students and staff.
