Ideally, firearms would not be available to the civilian population. However, at this stage it's far too late for that to ever be a realistic option.

Given how engrained guns are in American cultural identity-even were the second amendment absent--a ban would not only result in widespread violence as confiscation would be required, but also lead to a massive black market like you saw when alcohol was banned--something that in itself would further contribute to a rise in violent crime.
