Why does Graham County have such a high vaccination rate?
It is by far the highest in the state (even higher than Johnson County) and is one of the highest nationally?
In contrast, the neighboring counties have abysmal vaccination rates.

Yes maybe it is a statistical anomaly, but why here and nowhere else in the Great Plains? What is going on?

A very rural county that voted 79% for Trump doesn’t seem like ripe ground for vaccinations. Yes Graham County is home to a small black minority (3.4%, which is high by West Kansas standards) but that alone doesn’t explain the over 60% of people fully vaccinated.

Doing zero research, I'm gonna say that there is a prison there.   Hence the black people and high vaccination rate.

Are you sure about that?
I thought the African American presence was due to the descendants from the small historic black settlement of Nicodemus.

Is this true? this website has Graham as comparable to its neighbors and nowhere close to Johnson.

Are you confusing it with Mitchell County? I don't have any reason why this place would be special for vaccines.

Are you sure about that?

I'm not aware of a prison here but the population of Nicodemus is in the low single digits. I guess in a county of a few thousand that's enough to influence the overall percentage, but I'd bet most of the people related to anybody who would have settled here have moved out.

That’s interesting. Looks like NYT must have somehow not noticed this mistake since it’s been higher since I started looking at the maps back in May.
