The ACLU, like a lot of organizations, has made a mockery of its serious mission by trying to fit in with social media marketing trends.

I'm surprised they didn't put out a "Heil Hitler" t-shirt after defending that neo-Nazi group in Skokie, IL.

This is...perfectly fine? The ACLU has defended people who said things that were genuinely awful, but the whole point of this case was that someone said something a bit profane but utterly benign and a bunch of too-serious people (from the whiny snitch teammates to the school administrators they roped into their bullying campaign) got out the fainting couches and pretended that it was the end of the world.

By…selling a shirt with a controversial phrase that was at the center of a Supreme Court case on it? I’m surprised they don’t do stuff like that more.

Yes, but at the very least, it's nice to see them focusing on a free speech case again. Think there's an open question whether they'd be willing to defend someone's speech that isn't benign enough to print on a t-shirt (this piece on the ACLU's internal tensions was revealing), but hey, baby steps.

While the position on the first amendmenr is correct, this is incredibly bad taste. Its like the worst possible way to do a good thing. Defend someones right to say stupid things but dont go around saying those stupid things yourself if you are supposed to be a respectable organization.

It's embarrassing. " school", while protected speech, is not a professional or positive thing for a serious organization like the ACLU to be promoting. Imagine if Moms Against Drunk Driving put out a shirt that said "My kid shouldn't have died in a car accident (sane, normal)". It's just bad taste and I'm tired of what are supposed to be professional organizations presenting themselves like 12-year-olds on social media.

Those situations are in no way comparable. Nobody died, it was an innocuous post on social media that the ACLU defended in federal court and won. This is such a non-issue I can’t believe it’s being discussed. Swear words are just words, there’s no reason why the ACLU shouldn’t sell this shirt.

People who are mad about this shirt are the reason the ACLU exists.

Lol, I never said anything about how the ACLU shouldn't be allowed to do anything. Believe it or not, some people would prefer a bit of professionalism in this world. I don't want the American Civil Liberties Union to present itself with the same attitude as your average TikTok influencer.

The ACLU has lost it lately, sadly. The inmates are now running the asylum:

I am sure you would employ these phrases in a job interview.

I made a thread a while back about how unprofessional attitudes have seeped into the workplace culture over the last 10 years or more. Unfortunately, I could see some job interviews using language like this. But I don't have to like it. What can I say? I take issues seriously.

The shirt is kind of cringe, but because it's a weak attempt at try-hard edginess that just happens to be related to a case, not because it's "unprofessional" or whatever.
