in other words, if joe lieberman was elected as an indy, hed be forced to be an indy for his six year term.

if richard shelby wanted to change parties in mid-term, hed be forced to pull a phil gramm and resign his seat and run in the special election.

How exactly would you enforce it? If someone votes with the other party, what does it matter? (and no, under the American system the mandate is personal)

Wayne Morse and Jim Jeffords on one side, and the myriad of Southern Democrats turned Republicans on ther other side would take issue with that.

Loyalty pledges to a party conflict with the purpose of a legislator, which is serving ALL their constituents.
