I don’t think he’ll be anywhere near a threat to Abbott. Ideologically speaking, Abbott hasn’t done anything to anger the base enough to throw him out.

The sad thing is that if he somehow returns to Congress he'll inevitably be painted as some sort of trailblazing hero just for being black Republicans in spite of his record and comments. I don't mean this in the common 'turkeys voting for Christmas' (or thanksgiving) analogy that gets thrown around, but to be a trailblazing hero, you have to, you know, achieve something in some way.
