Maryland was also the first state to enact a police bill of rights in the 1970s:

Hogan always played a modern on TV more than he actually was one, but between his unsuccessful attempt at Vito's of this as well as a bill abolishing life without parole for juvenile offenders oh, he is turning into a major league HP on criminal justice issues.

I wonder if he plans on running for president in 2024, and is shifting right to help whatever his very slim chances (if any) of winning in the primary would be

This isn't a rightwing shift. The defining feature of Hogan's politics has always been suburban racism. It's what got him elected

Is it really "suburban racism", or is it common sense? Suburbanites don't like crime and Democrats are seen as associated with crime...people don't like crime, leftwingers need to tackle it and stop demonizing all law enforcement....they are needed to apply the law.....at the same time law enforcement should not abuse their power.

Harford, AA, Howard, Baltimore Counties are all places that despise Baltimore's annoying crime, even PG....Hogan has smart politics here, but he's not going to be president......

This prominent Baltimore police officer is slamming Democrats for overriding Hogan's veto:

I don't think it was Democrats who attempted to overthrow our democratic government for a narcissistic sociopathic autocrat wannabe. Also, if Democrats are "seen as associated with crime," why have most suburbs been moving to the left in recent years? That's a pretty baseless accusation.

For me, it's the exact opposite. Republicans talk a good game about "law and order" and are all about some #BackTheBlue and PoliceLivesMatter when cops are murdering Black people but seem to think it's okay to resist the police when they try to keep our Capitol safe from fascist mobs of deplorables.

They are moving left because of economics and BLM, yes, but they still don't like crime. No one likes crime, except for foolish politicians and leftwing panderers/anarchists who use it to fool minority voters that the police are the big problem.....

Also, Democrats have been seen as soft on crime since the 1960s. That is how Agnew came to power in Maryland. Andy Harris usually runs against the City of Baltimore in his congressional campaigns, because he represents a part of swingy Baltimore County.....

Hogan is a moderate law and order Republican....Maryland likes those types....Agnew, Erhlich, Hogan, etc.

Yes, the Republicans have a white entitlement problem.

Agnew was elected by plurality against a Democratic opponent who was a segregationist and seen as a bit too law-and-order, and no one really missed him when he was gone.
