Wow, remember when Mark Warner was supposed to be the Democrats’ “Great Moderate Hope” back in 2008?

They didn't have to go this hard, but they did. I also think this is a really interesting glimpse into how Virginia has changed. There's no way a VA Democrat would air an ad like this nowadays.

Ah yes, Unbeatable #Populist Purple heart Titan [checks notes] Mark Warner.

But yes, Mark Sexgod Warner should absolutely release this from the vault (rural leftist, normal, sane).

In the interest of pedantry, the actual official title is "The Ballad of Mark Warner".

Given that his overperformance in the southwest, a region where this artifact shows his long-term commitment to outreach, is much of what let him hang on by a thread in the 2014 bloodbath, he absolutely owes it to the fine people of Buchanan County and the Bluegrass Brothers to make this part of his image again. As quaint as it may seem to an audience such as this site, this sort of rural outreach should be a key part of the Democratic strategy to fight unfavorable trends in the Senate and Electoral College. It doesn't have to be this performative, but if Jon Tester could survive 2018 and Mark Warner could turn the tip of Virginia blue in another time, there's clearly much to be learned.

I read "bluewave" as a bluegrass-derived electronica genre, like darkwave or vaporwave but chicken-fried. I'd listen to it.

There's a bit innocence and nostalgia in this that wouldn't play well today

Warner and SW Virginia (and rural Virginia more generally) go back a long way. Their support was a key part of his victory in the 2001 gubernatorial election for which this was made, but they were actually an even more important part of his coalition in his first election, when he unsuccessfully tried to unseat his co-surnamist John Warner, moderate darling of NoVa, in the 1996 Senate race.

The county map from the 1996 Senate election was absolutely wild - Mark got nearly 70% in Dickinson (Trump +59), while John wins Fairfax by 15 and only loses by 5 in Arlington. We won't be seeing anything like that for a long, long time.
