Be it resolved:
1. The Southern Chamber hereby condemns and repudiates the racist comment made by Virginia Governor Emily DeSantis during a Zoom call with educators two days ago.
2. Racism has no place in politics and society, and as a region, more must be done to educate citizens on the impact of such language.

RICHMOND - Governor Emily DeSantis (Fed) of Virginia has appeared on tape discussing the state of education in her state, mentioning that African-Atlasian students “just naturally do worse [...] nothing we can really do about it.”

The Governor’s comments, made during a recorded Zoom forum with local education leaders, have brought concerns to the forefront regarding their perceived racist implications. Several local officials have called for her resignation, and regional and Federalist authorities have faced pressure to respond: Southern Governor LouisvilleThunder and Senators North Carolina Yankee and Spark have been asked to speak out against Governor DeSantis, and perhaps even join calls for her resignation.

The statement was racist and completely inappropriate. I believe the Chamber should take a stand here and say that these kind of comments should not be tolerated. In addition, I have called on her to resign, and encourage other Southern leaders to do the same.

I am very strongly behind the resolution as currently worded. I do not think a resignation is yet necessary - an speedy apology combined with a newfound drive to make amends and help conditions in black schools (such as fixing leaky roofs), would be more worthwhile, and do more for black Virginians than a mere apology.

Stepping in here as a citizen:

I appreciate, those words Mr. Delegate (unsure if you are the Dean or Deputy Speaker atm, sorry Tim). I contend that that remark by the Governor (of Virginia) was out of character for her but what she said was hurtful and an apology seems appropriate.

She can and should work to renew any trust that she lost because of this gaffe by continuing to govern with vigor in helping communities of color in Virginia. And this includes working to improve low-income area schools, especially ones in majority-minority school districts.

I think it would be appropriate to pass this since there isn't necessarily a call for her to specifically resign, so she can have the opportunity to renew the confidence of the people of Virginia. As a party leader I will say that we intend on running a new candidate in the next NPC election for Governor of Virginia.
