John McCain decides he will have a 3rd attempt as President in 2012 against incumbent Barack Obama. Everything remains the same as OTL with the same Obama campaign. Who wins? Discuss with maps. Will McCain be the comeback king or will he be the first Presidential candidate since Adlai Stevenson to lose 2 elections in a row?

It would probably be pretty much the same.

I can't think of a scenario where McCain wins the nomination, especially after how much trouble Romney went through to win the nomination IRL.

If he did...

Barack Obama/Joe Biden (D) 54%
John McCain/Kelly Ayotte (R) 45%

I find it hard to imagine Obama winning MO in 2012 if he didn't in 2008. Maybe he holds on to NC, but MO is a stretch.

Probably, but a McCain rehash disenchants the Tea Party enough to significantly reduce turnout on the Republican's end. Romney had novelty and had at least run on a proto-Tea Party cause (immigration) in 2008. Indiana and NE-02 flip because of reduced turnout on Obama's end. Forgive my skepticism, because you post much bigger Obama landslides in just about every thread.
