You go to school. Graduate middle school. Graduate high school. Play by the rules, get good grades, work hard, go to a good college and graduate. You have a bachelor's degree, but job prospects are very hard to attain.

What happened, number one, and also, why does this group tend to vote Democratic??

Few job prospects leads to souring on the predominant economic establishment and combined with college debt loads, which makes these the spiritual successor to the debt laden farmers of the WJB era, with low crop prices being the equivalent of fewer job prospects.

All this points to support for Democrats.

All of this but I would also argue that higher education attainment also leads to more empathy and a more flexible worldview which meshes better with the Democratic messaging on the importance of diversity and clashes with the over-emphasis the GOP puts on upholding white, Christian cultural norms, preferences, and morals.

It's being just well educated enough to realize how ed you are.

This is also why the myth that Bernie and Trump had a similar appeal was always nonsense. The Bernie/AOC wing of the party is dominated by low income but well educated 20 and 30 somethings whereas Trump supporters were 50 and 60 something poorly educated but moderately well off voters. Both may be populist in a sense but the content and substance of the sort of populism that appeals to these two polar opposite demographics could not be more different.
